How to Find Daycare in Durham Region: A Honest Guide From a Local Dad

If you're reading this, you're probably in the same spot I was not long ago — staring down the Durham Region childcare waitlist and wondering how this is so hard in 2026.

I've been through it. I live in Pickering with my family, and finding childcare here felt like a second job. So I'm going to share everything I learned — the practical stuff, the stuff nobody tells you, and a few things I wish someone had told me from the start.

Start earlier than you think

I know you've heard this before, but I want to be specific. If you're pregnant and reading this, put your name on waitlists now. Not when the baby arrives. Not when your mat leave is winding down. Now.

The waitlists in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, and across Durham Region can run 12 to 18 months or longer, especially for infant spots. Toddler and preschool spots move a bit faster, but not fast enough to leave it to the last minute.

Know what you're looking for

Before you start calling centres, get clear on a few things. It'll save you a lot of wasted applications.

What age group does your child fall into? In Ontario, licensed childcare is typically divided into infant (birth to 18 months), toddler (18 months to 2.5 years), and preschool (2.5 to 4 years). Each age group has different ratios, different availability, and different pricing. A centre might have preschool spots wide open and a two-year infant waitlist.

How far are you willing to drive? During rush hour, the difference between a centre in Pickering and one in Ajax can be significant. Think about your actual commute — morning drop-off and afternoon pickup, five days a week. A centre that's 20 minutes away in theory might be 40 minutes in January traffic.

Do you need full-time or part-time care? Not every centre offers part-time spots, and the ones that do often fill them differently. Be upfront about what you need.

Where to look in Durham Region

Durham Region doesn't use the OneList system that some other Ontario regions have. That means there's no single centralized portal to browse and apply. Instead, you'll need to go centre by centre. Here are your main options.

The Region of Durham operates several early learning and child care centres directly. You can request to be placed on their waitlist through the Region's website or by calling the centre you're interested in.

Beyond the regional centres, there are dozens of licensed private and non-profit childcare providers across Durham. The Ontario government's "Find and Pay for Childcare" tool on the Ministry of Education website lets you search by postal code, but the information can be outdated.

Home child care is another option. Licensed home child care agencies like Wee Watch coordinate care in private homes with smaller group sizes. It can be a good fit for families who want a more intimate setting, especially for infants.

The $10/day childcare program (CWELCC)

If you haven't already, make sure any centre you're considering is enrolled in the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care program. Enrolled centres have significantly reduced fees. Not all licensed centres have opted in, so it's worth asking directly.

What nobody tells you

Waitlists are not first-come, first-served at every centre. Some prioritize siblings of current families, staff children, or families in specific neighbourhoods. Don't assume your position on the list is fixed.

Spots open up in waves, especially in September when older children move to school-based programs. If your timing aligns with the fall transition, your odds improve.

Don't just apply and wait silently. Check in with centres every couple of months. A polite email or call keeps your name fresh and signals that you're genuinely looking. Directors notice.
